Both sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy are treatment methods which involve injecting a substance inside the veins to relieve swelling and prevent them from rupturing and bleeding. Both these methods are used to treat vein related disorders such as varicose veins, spider veins, hemorrhoids, esophageal varices, hydrocele, hemangioma and any other disease that cause the veins to accumulate blood or swell up. The success rate and choice between the two depends on the extent and type of disorder.

During sclerotherapy the doctor injects a solution that stimulates the walls of the veins, thus making them shrink and close up. The blood in these veins is mostly diverted into the neighboring ‘healthy’ veins of the body part being treated. This form of treatment is generally used for treating varicose veins and spider veins; however some doctors also recommend the treatment for curing discomfort caused due to internal hemorrhoids. In recent times the technique of sclerotherapy guided by ultrasound has been used, making it easy for the doctor to better target the affected veins. The technique of duplex ultrasound is very effective in detecting affected veins lying under the surface, thus enabling the doctor to treat them.

Unlike normal sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy uses foam solution for treating problems related to veins. The solution is created by foaming it using air or another suitable gas. This foaming is performed using mechanical pumps to mix the gas evenly with the solution. The underlying principle here is that foaming gives more surface area to the solution, making it more efficient in targeting the blood vessels and sealing them to prevent bleeding or the vein from rupturing. In this treatment the solution does not get mixed with the blood but replaces it, thus the solution does not get diluted by blood. Foam sclerotherapy is more useful in treating disorders that cause veins to balloon up or enlarge, such as in case of external hemorrhoids.

Both these methods have been effective non-surgical methods of treating vein related disorders and preventing complications arising due to them. These treatments involve simple procedures compared to a surgery and can be generally performed at a clinic, rarely requiring hospitalization. However, in severe cases the patient would be kept under observation for side effects, if any. Though the treatment is successful in most cases, some patients may need to repeat the treatment in case the problem is not fully resolved during the first attempt. The patient must discuss both the options with the doctor and choose the one which is more likely to get rid of the problem. Apart from this, he must also follow directions given by the doctor, both before and after the treatment, to get good results.
